Grimsay lies on the causeway chain of the A865, the road that links North Uist to Benbecula across a string of tidal flats and small islands; most traffic crosses without stopping. The coastline here is a maze of skerries, small rocky islets, and sheltered inlets, unlike the open Atlantic beaches elsewhere in the Uists. Turn off at the middle of the island for the working harbour at Kallin, built in 1985 for the local shellfish boats, which still land lobster, prawns and scallops here; Salar sells the catch from a shop by the pier.

The island also has the Uist Wool mill, which spins yarn from local fleece, and the Grimsay Boat Museum, a small collection of traditional Hebridean workboats. About 150 people live here, most connected to fishing in one way or another.
