Places to explore in West DunbartonshireScotland · Central Scotland
Small but sharply divided, West Dunbartonshire runs from the Clyde at Dumbarton to the southern shore of Loch Lomond, with the volcanic Kilpatrick Hills in between. The Highland Boundary Fault crosses the loch here, and the low hill of Duncryne gives one of the finest views over its scattered islands. Dumbarton Castle sits on a twin-peaked volcanic rock that was the stronghold of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde. At Balloch, where the Leven leaves the loch, Balloch Castle keeps its country park and Loch Lomond Shores draws the visitors. The Romans ended the Antonine Wall close by.
