A complete Arts and Crafts garden laid out in the early 1900s by the landscape designer Thomas Mawson, and reckoned the only one of its kind still intact in Cheshire. Terraces, a sunken garden and a rose garden sit below an avenue of rhododendrons — nearly 3,000 of them, many over a century old — that puts on a proper show in May. The house has been a retreat and conference centre for decades and isn’t generally open, but the garden opens a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, cash only on the gate. Tarporley is a few miles south.
