Come in early spring, when bulbs carpet the ground under old trees along the River Wye. The Weir is a ten-acre National Trust garden at Swainshill, west of Hereford, tumbling down to the riverbank; tucked into it is the largest piece of standing Roman masonry in the county, left from a villa. There’s a walled garden and glasshouse too. Hereford station is about 8km east.
