At the heart of The Garden House stand the ruins of Buckland Monachorum’s medieval vicarage — a tower and old walls that a schoolmaster, Lionel Fortescue, wrapped in a walled garden from 1947. Ten acres now run out from it in terraces and looser, wilder plantings on Dartmoor’s south-west edge. Paid entry through the season. Bere Alston station is about 5.5km west, and Buckland Abbey is close by.
