A grey granite Tudor house above the Tamar, one of the least-altered of its age in the country, still hung with old tapestries and lit without electricity. It was the Edgcumbe family’s seat before they moved to Mount Edgcumbe. Terraced gardens drop to a restored quay on the river, where the sailing barge Shamrock is moored. National Trust. Calstock station is a short walk down the valley, about 1.5km.
