Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was born at Kirkharle in 1716 and baptised in the little church here before going on to reshape half the great parks in England. The estate has since laid out a serpentine lake from one of his own surviving plans, circled by a walk of a mile or so, with a craft courtyard and café at the centre. The courtyard is free to visit; Morpeth station is a fair way off, around 19km east.
