The gardens are the reason to come to Belsay. A winding Quarry Garden runs through the ravines left where sandstone was cut to build the hall, its damp rock faces planted with ferns, rhododendrons and unlikely exotics that shelter well down in the shade. Beyond it lie formal terraces and a Grade I landscape linking the ruined medieval castle to the Greek Revival house. English Heritage looks after the lot; it’s seasonal, near the village of Belsay.
