Northumbrian Sauna’s home venue is a wood-fired barrel sauna on the shore at Higham Lakes, north-west of Ponteland. Sessions are guided by sauna master Fenwick Ridley, known as the Ice Viking, and the sauna runs hot, at 100 to 110°C. Between rounds you dip in a sectioned-off, sandy-bottomed part of the lake, and the operator is firm that it’s a dip, not a swim.
