St Cuthbert’s stands on the wide green at the heart of Elsdon, the old capital of Redesdale. It’s a medieval church with a long, low nave, and human bones were once found beneath it — hundreds of them, traditionally linked to the Battle of Otterburn fought nearby in 1388. This is remote country: the nearest station, Morpeth, is a good 28km east, so you’ll want a car.
