Winter’s Gibbet stands alone on the open moor above Elsdon — a replica gallows on the spot where, in the 1790s, the body of the murderer William Winter was hung in chains after his execution for killing an old woman nearby. A carved wooden head dangles from it today in place of the original. It’s a bleak, memorable marker on the moorland road, open to all, with a small pull-in beside it.
