Strung along a single street below a ruined castle mound, Harbottle is a small village deep in Coquetdale. Above it rise the Harbottle Hills, where a short climb leads to the Drake Stone — a huge sandstone boulder perched on the moor — and a quiet lake in the nature reserve behind. Alwinton is a couple of miles further up the valley. This is remote walking country, well away from any railway.
