Queen Caroline had these laid out as her private pleasure garden in the 1720s, extending west from Kensington Palace, and they’re now open to everyone, free, roughly dawn to dusk. A statue of Peter Pan, commissioned by his creator J.M. Barrie, stands by the Long Water, which flows south into the Serpentine in neighbouring Hyde Park. Kensington Palace itself, home to various royals since William III, needs a separate ticket to go inside.
