Sixty-odd acres of gardens fall away from a neo-Elizabethan mansion — rebuilt in 1870 to a design by Anthony Salvin — into a valley strung with a chain of ornamental pools. Brigadier Heber-Percy made the gardens from 1922, damming the stream the following year to create the pools. The house stays private, but the terraces, woodland and water gardens open to visitors. The estate village of Hodnet sits alongside.
