A sheltered wooded valley near Hartland holds Docton Mill, where a mill worked from Saxon times until 1910. The garden around it fills the combe with bog plantings, magnolias and borders, running down towards the coast a short walk from Speke’s Mill Mouth, where North Devon’s tallest waterfall drops to the shore. Paid seasonal entry, with a tearoom. This is remote country — Barnstaple, the nearest station, is well over 30km east.
