Elizabeth, first Countess of Ilchester, started this as a kitchen garden in 1765; her plant-hunting descendants filled it with the rare and tender things they brought home, and the mild, sheltered air near Chesil Beach let them thrive. The result is twenty acres of subtropical and woodland planting, Grade I listed, among the great mild-climate gardens in Britain. Paid entry, open most of the year; Upwey station is about 10km east.
