Cardhu was built up largely by two women — Helen Cumming, who sold whisky through the farmhouse window and threw the excisemen off the scent, and later her daughter-in-law Elizabeth, who sold the business to Johnnie Walker in 1893. It’s still a key malt in those blends. The visitor centre sits above the Spey near Archiestown, with paid tours; Elgin is the nearest station, about 19km north.
