When Elizabeth I ordered rood lofts torn out in 1561, most of Devon’s were lost. St Mary kept its gallery, and today it holds the only complete medieval rood loft left in the county — carved around 1540 and brought here from a demolished chapel at nearby Umberleigh in 1800. More than a hundred roof bosses run above it. Usually open in daylight hours; Umberleigh station is about 2km east.
