Castle Hill has been the Fortescue family’s home since 1684, and the current Palladian house dates from around 1730, its parkland scattered with 18th-century follies — a mock castle, a triumphal arch, temples — that give the place its name. The woodland garden is at its best when the magnolias and rhododendrons flower, alongside a more recent Millennium Garden with a modern water sculpture. Gardens and tea room open on weekdays through the season, with an admission charge; house tours need pre-booking for groups. The Tarka Trail runs a couple of kilometres north.
