West Wittering is the sort of wide, clean beach that fills up fast on a hot day. It sits at the entrance to Chichester Harbour in West Sussex, a broad expanse of sand that shelves gently into shallow water, which makes it a firm family favourite for paddling and sandcastles. At the northern end the sand curls round into East Head, a sand-dune spit in the care of the National Trust, good for a walk and full of birds along the harbour edge. The open water off the beach draws windsurfers and kitesurfers, and the King Charles III England Coast Path passes just behind. The car park is pay-and-display and the beach gets very busy in summer, so an early start helps; the tide runs strongly through the harbour mouth, so keep an eye on children near the channel.
