When the tide’s out, Uig Sands unrolls into a huge amber sweep of ripple-marked sand below the hills of west Lewis. This is where the medieval Lewis Chessmen came to light in 1831 — six of the originals are now on show at Lews Castle in Stornoway. It’s a long single-track drive out on the B8011 to Ardroil; time it for low water and the beach is at its best.
