Uig is a remote district of scattered crofts in the far south-west of Lewis, reached by a long, winding single-track drive. Its claim to fame is Uig Sands, the vast tidal beach where the medieval Lewis Chessmen — walrus-ivory pieces, probably Norwegian — were dug out of the dunes before 1831. The originals are in Edinburgh and London now, with replicas at the local heritage centre. Slow going, but a grand run out.
