A mile and a half’s walk along the north shore of Castle Semple Loch gets you to a roofless late Gothic church, founded in 1504 by John, Lord Sempill, for a college of priests serving his castle. The castle has gone entirely. Sempill was killed at Flodden in 1513 and his son extended the east end to take the tomb, which is why it finishes in an unusual three-sided apse. The walls stand to full height and the detail is barely altered; worship stopped at the Reformation in 1560. Historic Environment Scotland looks after it — free, unstaffed, open whenever you get there.
