Southey's celebrated cascade above Derwentwater.
Robert Southey made these falls famous with his 1820 tumbling poem ‘The Cataract of Lodore’, all rhyming rush and roar. Lodore Falls itself spills through boulders in a wooded ravine behind the Lodore Falls Hotel at the south end of Derwentwater. A short path leads in from the road for a small honesty-box charge — but time your visit for after heavy rain, as the falls can shrink to a trickle in a dry spell. Windermere station is about 25km away to the south-east.
