The Bowder Stone is an enormous boulder, reckoned at around 2,000 tons and some 30 feet high, sitting improbably on one edge in the woods of Borrowdale. It fell from the crag above thousands of years ago, and a wooden staircase — there’s been one here since the 1890s — lets you climb to the top. It’s a short, easy walk from the National Trust car park nearby, and a firm favourite with children.
