Watendlath is a small National Trust hamlet beside a tarn, hidden in a hanging valley high above Borrowdale and reached by a single narrow lane. The road up passes Ashness Bridge and the Surprise View over Derwentwater. A packhorse bridge crosses the beck by the tarn, and paths lead over the fell to Rosthwaite. Hugh Walpole set part of his Herries saga here.
