Worsley was the birthplace of the canal age: the Duke of Bridgewater’s canal, opened in 1761 to carry coal from the mines here to Manchester, is often called Britain’s first modern canal. Iron oxide from those old workings still tints the water a striking orange around the village’s mock-Tudor green. Nearby, RHS Garden Bridgewater has brought a huge new garden to the area. Walkden station is about 1.5km to the north-west.
