Whitehaven is a Georgian planned town on the west coast, its grid of streets laid out from the 1680s by the Lowther family around a busy harbour that shipped coal and imported tobacco from the American colonies. The Rum Story museum covers that side of the trade, and the harbour was famously raided by John Paul Jones during the American War of Independence in 1778. The station is a short walk from the quays.
