St Bees Head is a run of red sandstone sea cliffs on the west coast, rising to around 90m — the only place in England where the black guillemot breeds, and an RSPB reserve alive with seabirds in spring and summer. A clifftop path from the village of St Bees gives grand views out over the Solway, and this is where Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk sets off for the North Sea. St Bees station is about 3km inland.
