St Bees is a sandstone village behind a long beach on the Cumbrian coast, best known as the start of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk, which sets off from the shore here for Robin Hood’s Bay. North of the beach rise the red cliffs of St Bees Head, an RSPB reserve and the only cliff-nesting seabird colony in north-west England, alive with guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes in spring. The station is right in the village.
