Tintagel’s ruined castle has been tied to the King Arthur legend since Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote him into it in the 12th century, and the headland is spectacular whatever you make of the story. English Heritage runs the site; since 2019 a footbridge has spanned the gorge between mainland and island, rejoining the two halves for the first time in centuries. The village sits back from the cliffs, with the old church of St Materiana out towards the headland.
