The churchyard at Painswick is famous for its clipped yews — traditionally counted at ninety-nine, with a legend that a hundredth never survives. The town is pale stone on a steep hillside, sometimes called the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, with Painswick Beacon and a rococo garden just above it. Stroud station is about 5km south.
