The wire for the first transatlantic telegraph cable was drawn here, at Thomas Bolton’s copper works beside the Churnet — sixty tons of it, spun for the 1858 cable that briefly linked Britain and America. The works are long gone, and Oakamoor is now a green walkers’ village, its mill pool and riverside paths tucked into the wooded Churnet Valley, with the old railway trail running nearby.
