The ruined mansion at the heart of Alton Towers Resort was once the seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury, who held Alton from 1412 until 1924. Its Grade I gardens, begun in 1814 by the 15th Earl with designers Robert Abraham and Thomas Allason, brought water two miles across the valley to feed a chain of lakes and elaborate garden buildings. The ruin and grounds now sit inside one of Britain’s biggest theme parks, open seasonally with a ticket that covers rides and gardens alike — Alton Castle, the family’s other house, stands nearby in Alton.
