Newton Ferrers runs down a steep hillside of gardens to a tidal creek of the Yealm estuary, its waterfront filled with moored boats. At low tide you can cross a tidal footway to Noss Mayo on the opposite bank; higher up, a small ferry does the same in season. Plymouth and the nearest station are about 10km to the north-west.
