Newburgh looks out over the Tay at the north-west edge of Fife, an old royal burgh that made its living from the river. Just east lie the ruins of Lindores Abbey, where monks were recorded distilling aqua vitae in 1494 — one of the earliest references to Scotch whisky. A distillery has since been revived beside the abbey.
