A former royal burgh in north Fife, Auchtermuchty kept its old town centre and a scatter of low weaver’s cottages when the linen trade faded. It sits at the foot of the Lomond Hills, handy for walks up onto the tops. Ladybank, with its junction station, is about 7km east.
