Lindores Abbey has a fair claim to be the birthplace of Scotch: a 1494 exchequer record has a friar here, John Cor, buying malt to make “aqua vitae”. The modern distillery stands right beside the abbey ruins at Newburgh and has brought whisky-making back to the spot. Guided tours run daily and end with a couple of drams — book ahead through the website. Ladybank station is about 11km to the south-east.
