Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is an old fishing and mining town on a broad, curving bay, with the longest promenade in Northumberland. Its landmark is ‘Couple’, a bronze sculpture by Sean Henry installed offshore in 2007 — two larger-than-life figures standing on a raised platform out in the water, looking back at the shore. The beach was rebuilt at the same time with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of imported sand. Ashington station is about 4km west.
