Melverley is a scattered hamlet close to the Welsh border, where the Vyrnwy runs down to meet the Severn. Its reason for a visit is St Peter’s, an all-timber black-and-white church rebuilt in 1406 after the earlier one was burned; the whole frame is pegged together, with barely a nail in it. It stands right on the riverbank, and is usually open to look inside.
