Marple is where the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals meet, and its great flight of 16 locks lifts boats a steep 200-odd feet up the hillside - a fine towpath walk. Below, the Marple Aqueduct carries the canal high over the River Goyt on tall stone arches, engineered by Benjamin Outram around 1800. There’s a lively town centre with shops and cafés too. The station is a few minutes from the locks.
