Gerald of Wales was born at Manorbier Castle around 1146 and called it the pleasantest spot in Wales. The Norman castle still stands, privately owned but open to visitors, above a sandy cove and a small valley running down to the sea. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes along the cliffs, close to the neolithic burial chamber known as the King’s Quoit. Manorbier station is a short walk inland.
