Kinloch is the only village on Rum, strung along the head of Loch Scresort. Behind it stands Kinloch Castle, an extravagant Edwardian mansion built around 1900 for the textile magnate Sir George Bullough — though its future has been uncertain for years and public access comes and goes. Rum itself is a national nature reserve, reached by CalMac ferry from Mallaig on the mainland, so a visit here is a proper day out rather than a quick hop.
