At the southern head of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus is built around the point where Thomas Telford’s Caledonian Canal steps down to the loch through a staircase of five locks. Sit by the towpath and watch the boats work their way up or down. It’s a busy little village in season, with cafés and cruise boats, and a good midpoint on the Great Glen between Inverness and Fort William.
