Fishguard splits in two: the upper town on the hill, and Lower Town (Y Cwm), the old herring-fishing quarter set around a tidal quay in a steep wooded creek. In 1797 a French force of 1,400 landed nearby in the last invasion of Britain and surrendered two days later, the terms signed at the Royal Oak inn. Stena Line ferries still sail to Rosslare in Ireland from Goodwick, where the station is, just to the north-west.
