Peel Tower is the tall stone monument crowning Holcombe Hill above Ramsbottom, put up in 1852 to Sir Robert Peel — the Bury-born prime minister who founded the police force. It stands about 39m high, and on open days you can climb the internal steps for a wide sweep across the West Pennines. The pull up from the town is short but steep. Free; Entwistle station is the nearest, though it’s a fair walk over the moor.
