A working steam fairground near Liphook, with Edwardian rides, traction engines and little railways, all fired up on open days
Hollycombe is a collection of working steam machinery kept in a wooded corner near Liphook, close to the Hampshire border. The heart of it is an Edwardian steam fairground — gallopers, swingboats and other rides driven by steam engines, much as they were a century ago — alongside traction engines, farm machinery and two little railways that carry passengers around the grounds. There are woodland gardens on the slope as well. Because everything runs on steam, the collection only opens on selected days through the season, so it’s worth checking before you set out. It sits within the South Downs, with Black Down, the highest point of the range, a few miles east.
