The highest peak above Glen Coe, a complex knot of ridges and corries hidden behind the Three Sisters
Open accessin a National Nature Reserve open to the public
Bidean nam Bian is the highest ground above Glen Coe, though you can’t actually see the summit from the glen road — it’s tucked away behind the three great spurs known as the Three Sisters of Glencoe. At 1,149m it’s a Munro, a Scottish hill over 3,000 feet, and the high point of the old county of Argyll. This is a serious mountain: a tangle of narrow ridges, steep corries (the coires, or rocky hollows, that bite into its sides) and rocky tops, with the neighbouring summit of Stob Coire Sgreamhach usually taken in on the same round. The classic approach climbs one of the hidden valleys behind the Three Sisters from the road through Glencoe, and route-finding among the corries is genuinely tricky in cloud, so it’s a hill for a clear day and some navigation confidence. The whole area sits within the Ben Nevis and Glen Coe mountains, some of the most dramatic in Scotland.
