Witley Court was one of the grandest houses in England until a fire in 1937 gutted it; English Heritage keeps the huge shell as a ruin you can walk right into. Around it are the formal gardens William Nesfield called his ‘monster work’, centred on the Perseus and Andromeda fountain — a Portland-stone monster restored in 2002 and fired on the hour through the season, throwing a jet many metres up. The baroque parish church next door survived untouched. There’s a charge; Hartlebury station is about 10km north-east.
