Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild raised this French Renaissance chateau above the village of Waddesdon in the 1870s and 80s, hiring the Paris architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur to echo the châteaux of the Loire. The grounds match the ambition: a Victorian parterre bedded out twice a year, a rococo aviary, fountains and woodland walks. It belongs to the National Trust now, with timed tickets and busy weekends. Aylesbury Vale Parkway is about 5km east.
